Devil Grass is a Phoenix, Arizona based act that plays an energetic blend of dark, loud, and high-lonesome tumbleweed rock’n’roll.

The act came together toward the end of the summer of 2015, comprised of veteran players recently relocated from scattered east coast cities. Devil Grass released their debut single, “In The Cut,” in February of 2016, recorded with acclaimed valley producer Cory Spotts, with a music-video for the song dropping shortly thereafter. The single will be featured on the outfit’s forthcoming EP “Dog + Cross." As of writing, the record has been finished, awaiting a mid-winter release.

Since late 2015, the band has been regularly gracing Phoenix-area stages with their high-energy and dynamic live performances, playing local spots such as Last Exit Live, Rebel Lounge, Yucca Tap Room, Rogue Bar, Rips, Chopper Johns, and others, on bills with acts ranging in vibe from subtle americana to punk and sludgy heavy metal. In November of 2016, the band was invited to play the 5th annual Sidepony Express Music Festival in Bisbee Arizona. Over the course of that weekend, Devil Grass played five shows in three days, in five entirely different formats, allowing the band to finally debut a quieter, twangier, more introspective version of their live-show (dubbed internally "the chill set"), something they'd been meaning to do since the act's inception. As "dynamic" has always been an important factor to what Devil Grass does, being now able to play as one of the loudest straight-up ROCK bands in town on one night, and then as sentimental, introspective, and quiet (-ish/-er) on the next, and knowing that the core songwriting behind the act's music holds its own in either format, has proven a major step in the band's evolution.

Devil Grass’s music draws influences from a variety of sources, ranging from alt-country, dark folk, doom metal, indie-rock, and many others. The band was recently described by Mitchell Hillman of the Phoenix New Times as belonging “to the growing camp of ‘Southwest Desert Rock’… along with any other band that allows you to taste the Sonoran wind in their music.” In all, the band provides a memorable and original experience. Catch them live, and sing along!

"Devil Grass has been kicking up some dust around town lately, and just as I became curious enough about them to check them out, they dropped a video for their first single. They are definitely riding high on the alt-country vibe, but they've got enough of an alternative rock edge that they could garner fans from either camp. They kind of belong to the growing camp of "Southwest Desert Rock," along with local bands Treasurefruit and The Desert Beats, along with any other band that allows you to taste the Sonoran wind in their music. It's a pretty great debut song, and I'm looking forward to what their future recordings hold in store. Not only is the music a pretty great ride, but lyrically there are some great lines and some surprising depth here as it tells the tale of lost love, but it's more of a reminder to keep your dreams alive even though those who inspired them may no longer be with you. At least that's what I get out of vivid imagery like "In the cut I'll lay and lick my wounds / Gonna make my way where the heartache blooms." I'll be very interested to see what Michael Roberts, Joshua Motley, Bernard LeVautour, and Craig Codrington do next as Devil Grass." -Mitchell Hillman, Phoenix New Times.
